To properly prepare your hides we
suggest that the hides be salted and dried. If you follow these
steps the quality of the finished hides will be improved.
Large pieces of meat or fat should be “beamed” off. Please make
every effort to keep
blood contamination to a minimum.
Eyes, ears, nose and lips should be
prepared and paws (if present) should be
skinned.
Using fine non-iodized salt, thoroughly salt hides making sure that
all areas are
saturated and
the edges are flat.
Place the hides on a flat inclined surface to allow moisture to run
off.
After 24 hours, repeat steps 3 and 4.
After an additional 24 hours, re-salt and hang hides to dry (over a
saw horse works
